About the Game:
The game is basically based on a platformer-genre with retro-graphics and sounds. The game contains a starting tutorial level and 3 main levels along with cutscenes in between to narrate the game’s story.
The player’s objective is to complete all the 3 main levels within the given time to win the game.
The game tests the player’s quick thinking and reaction to different obstacles. We hope you’ll have fun playing our game!
Storyline of the Game:
The story is open to the player’s interpretation, but the main story revolves around the premise of the player being a mountain climber/explorer, who gets lost while on an expedition to find an ancient artifact.
The player has been out in the cold for too long and needs to find a place to take shelter from the ice storm. The player luckily stumbles upon a mysterious and dark temple hidden deep in the mountains, and decides to explore it, but unbeknownst to the fact that the temple was forbidden and anyone who entered would get into big trouble.
The player finds a strange crystal which upon touching unleashes a cursed dark entity which tries to take over the host. It awakens their ‘Darkside’ and tries to take over the mind.
However, to the player’s surprise, the dark personality cannot fully control the host and the player can control the dark-side, but the more you try to gain control, the more you let your dark-side to take over your mind.
Also, if the player does not get rid of the curse before the time runs out, the dark-side takes over the mind completely. The player finally finds another magical crystal which removes the cursed entity and breaks the curse.
List of Themes used in the Game:
- Occam’s Razor: Used as an overall level design philosophy to keep everything simple and sober. One goal, basic controls, simple yet tricky obstacles. Simplicity is better than complexity!
- Retro Winter: Used in the game’s overall aesthetics such as winter themed backgrounds, ice blocks, snow tiles, ice spikes, and everything is represented in a retro fashion. Majority of the graphics and SFX are retro-style.
- Dissociative Identity Disorder: Used as a story element (the Dark-side) and gameplay design feature which it gives the player an advantage (player can jump higher) and simultaneously counters it with a disadvantage (the timer ticks down faster, giving a sense of thrill to the player).
- Murphy’s laws: Used as an element of surprise and mixed it with the storyline of the game. For example, we used it to display the fact that even though the Dark-side tried its best to take over the mind of the player, the player still found a way to get rid of the curse. (This relates to the law, “If anything can go wrong, then it will go wrong” and also “the Nature always sides with the hidden flaw.”)
- We were thinking of adding the theme of turn based combat, but then we decided to scrap the idea due to insufficient time to implement it. (like the player could fight some snow monster upon random encounter in the caves…)
